Have you ever listened to Ethel Cain?
This location is one I had in mind to shoot at for years. No, I'm not going to tell you exactly where it is, but if you do know it, you know that it's just one of those little spots you see off the road in backwoods NEPA. There's plenty of them, and thats what i love so much about the area I grew up in.
The heartbeat behind these images are birthed from much of Ethel Cain's lyrics that have swirling around my head for the last year; something to know about how I envision, compose, creatively direct, and edit my images is that my source for it all briths from music. The manner in which music opens us up is similar to cracking an egg open... somethings inside of you, and music just brings it out. It inspires you to move and break open parts of yourself.
I love working with Joylynn for the simple fact that she is not only extremely talented when it comes to expressing herself in front of the camera, but that her heart always seems to be in that "cracking-open-the-egg" place; she's always ready to take a risk and create something out of the box and original. Her personality is energetic, but grounded, and so open hearted + emotionally intelligent. I know that I can come to her with a concept and she's not only down, but feels it too.
If you haven't seen any of her other work, you very immediately must go her instagram (@joylynnraye).
Alas, I'm not one to talk about the art + nostalgia behind my images, so while you scroll below, please throw on "Family Tree" by Ethel to hear what was swirling around in the background of my conscious during this.
